Meet our team...

  • Carl Niebuhr

Today we introduce Carl Niebuhr, rotor wing pilot based in Richards Bay. Carl has been with the organisation for approximately two and half years, here’s a look into his world …

Tell us about yourself: “I grew up in a small town called Piet Retief. After school I lived in Pretoria for a few years, where I got to pursue my flying career. I’ve flown in a few interesting places like Siberia, Afghanistan and central Africa. Early in 2015 I moved to Richards Bay for the AMS position.”

Were you in any other trade before? “Being a pilot has been my only dream ever since I can remember, but part of the journey to accomplish this, meant I had to work as a junior salesman at a bicycle shop, and on different farms in England and Scotland as a farm hand/tractor driver.”

What is the best/worst thing to happen to you since you started working at AMS? “Best: I’ve met a whole lot of interesting and good people. Worst: can’t really think of anything...”

If you could master one skill you don’t have right now, what would it be? “Raising an energetic little toddler!”

What do you do in your spare time? “I value spending time with family and friends, or getting in some exercise or playing squash.”

What is the one thing about you few people know? “I am German.”

What do you enjoy most about your job? “Apart from the flying and medical side of things, there are very few helicopter pilot jobs that I know of, where you get to go home to your wife and children every day.”

What was your first thought when you woke up this morning? “Coffee!”

What has been the happiest day of your life? “Getting married, and meeting my son. Not on the same day of course!”

If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be? “A day in the life of a professional sportsman like a golfer or tennis pro should be pretty interesting!”

What is your greatest indulgence? “Braaivleis and ice cream. So much for being German!”

What is the one thing, you can’t live without? “In Richards Bay - it would definitely be air conditioning!”

Best piece of advice anyone ever gave you? “You can always choose your own attitude in life.”

Any motto you live by? “Treat others as you would like to be treated.”
