As the SA Red Cross Air Mercy Service operates a specialised service there are stringent criteria for medical, rescue and outreach crews, as follows:

MEDICAL CREW (fixed wing Pilatus PC 12 and Air Ambulance helicopter)
1. Minimum medical qualification required plus six months post qualification experience: -
  * Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) Registered Level 6 (Intermediate Life Support)
  * South African Nursing Council (SANC) Registered Nurse with Trauma or ICU experience
  * HPCSA Registered Medical Doctor
2. Preferably with Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine Exposure.
3. Ideal qualifications are: -
  * An Aero-medical Qualification.
  * Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) / Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) / Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) / Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS).

RESCUE CREW (Rescue helicopter):

Sea Rescue Division:
* Be a current member of NSRI - either a coxswain (rescue manager) or trainee coxswain.
* Be recommended by the Station Commander.
* Be able to swim, with at least two years service in the NSRI.
* Show leadership skills and have experience in sea rescue situations.

Mountain Rescue Division:
* Be a current member of WSAR (Wilderness Search and Rescue).
* Be a climber or mountaineer with technical ability.
* Be recommended by their organisation or peers.
* Have extensive knowledge of various mountain areas and experience in mountain-related rescues.


General Criteria:

* Own transport is a vital factor, as the hours of call-outs vary throughout the day and night.
* Physically capable of operating within the environment and coping with its demands.
* Successful completion of orientation programme per discipline.

OUTREACH CREW:

At present we draw on the services of specialists in the fields of Orthopaedics, Surgery (General, Plastic, Cardiac, Neurology), Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Psychiatry, Medicine, Ophthalmology , Dentistry, Urology, Dermatology, Paediatrics, ENT, Anaesthetics, Orthopaedic Appliances, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Emergency Medicine.
