After a grueling 2 500km walk Tommy Michael (60), Cliff Beautement (72), Eddie Michael (65) and Malcolm Johnson (49) were welcomed by AMS at their head office at the Cape Town International Airport on Sunday 03 June 2007. The welcoming event to acknowledge their remarkable dedication was proudly sponsored by Medscheme.
Ms Sandhya Vedalankar (Deputy General Manager: Discovery CSI) handed over eight ear thermometers valued at R3 500 to John Stone (CEO of the SA Red Cross Air Mercy Service - AMS) as a gesture of goodwill to mark Discovery's donation of R320 000.
The SA Red Cross Air Mercy Service (AMS) today unveiled its refitted addition to its fleet of specialist medical rescue aircraft. The Red Cross AMS provides flying doctor services to outlying rural towns of the Northern Cape, and transfers patients by specially converted aircraft to treatment centers in Kimberley.
AMS launched its new vehicles, funded by De Beers. This sponsorship will complement the services delivered by AMS to the community of the Northern Cape.
The support vehicles will be used to transport medical teams to rural areas when the AMS aircraft cannot land due to bad weather thereby preventing the cancellation of much needed clinics.
The AMS in partnership with Eurocopter Southern Africa and Agusta Westland participated in the African Aerospace and Defence (AAD) that took place at the Air Force base in Ysterplaat from the 17th of September until the 21st of September.

The KwaZulu - Natal base would like to take this opportunity of thanking Toyota Forklift for their generous donation of R28 729 towards the refurbishment of the Toyota Tug. A special thank you to Myen Naidoo for his efforts in making this possible and for his offer to service the Tug, at no cost to AMS. We are proud to be associated with Toyota Forklift and look forward to a long working relationship with them. A special thank you to Jan Badenhorst for being instrumental in the refurbishing of the tug and Hayden Ford for the design.
The SA Red Cross Air Mercy Service and the Western Cape Department of Health Metro emergency medical service launched the Eden District / Central Karoo rescue service on the 17 November 2009.
The AMS and Free State Department of Health (DoH) held a soup kitchen for patients travelling long distances to receive medical care at Pelomoni.
With much dedication and enthusiasm an anonymous sponsor donated soup and breads to provide the patients with a warm cup of soup when arriving at Pelomoni to receive medical care. Approximately 237 patients were fed during the month that the soup kitchen was held. A warm thank you to all that was involved in making the difference to these patient's lives.
Ms Ruth Lewin (Head: Corporate Sustainability Discovery) handed over an Advanced Life Support Jump bag valued at R2 000 to Ashwin Krishna (Operations Manager) and Andre Oliphant (Cape Town Base Manager) as a gesture of goodwill to mark Discovery's donation of R350 000 to the SA Red Cross Air Mercy Service (AMS).
The AMS in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health provides an emergency air ambulance and flying doctor & rural outreach programme taking critically needed healthcare to impoverished communities by flying specialist many of whom are volunteers and support personnel to outlying hospitals of KwaZulu – Natal (KZN).
In Oudtshoorn, AMS, Western Cape Department of Health Metro medical emergency service and the South African Police Service (SAPS) Oudtshoorn Highway Patrol joined together in an emergency crash drill and unprepared landing zone training exercise.
AMS would like to thank Dion Tromp from High Angle for his generous donation of specialist mountain rescue equipment specifically designed and manufactured for the helicopter rescue programme. Dion's donation will allow AMS and Department of Health EMS to implement the suggested changes to our mountain rescue procedures which emerged from the Rescue Week held in April with Oliver Kreuzer from Air Zermatt.
AMS celebrated the opening of the new King Shaka hangar facility at the King Shaka International Airport which took place on the 22November 2011.
A ceremonial unveiling was held for the opening of the new AMS hangar facility built by Sizonke Civils and Engineering at the King Shaka International Airport, funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.
The Western Province Aquatics in partnership with Swimming South Africa, City of Cape Town and the Department of Sport and Culture hosted a Ocean Splash program on Water Safety on Saturday, 17 December 2011.
The Cape Town Metro AMS Rescue helicopter was invited to partake in the program by displaying a sea rescue demonstration at Strandfontein Pavilion.
Mr Anton Bredell, Minister of Local Government Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, today handed over cheques for R315 000.00 each to Sea Rescue and Lifesaving SA.
The ceremony took place at Sea Rescues Melkbosstrand station and included the SAPS Dive Unit, The Red Cross Air Mercy service, METRO Rescue and the province's Disaster Management.
After the official speeches, cheque hand-overs and awards guests were treated to a rescue demonstration.
