Established at Richard's Bay Airport in December 2005, our base provides a helicopter emergency medical service for the whole Northern Zululand region, which has mountainous terrain and vast distances (an area of 15306 kilometers2 and a population of 823 657).
Working closely with the Richard's Bay EMRS, this service transports critically ill or injured patients to definitive care. In May 2006, the service airlifted 15 patients to hospital.
Rapid transfer of critically ill or injured patients by our advanced life support crew has huge advantages for patient outcome, as well as helps keep limited resources such as road ambulances and personnel in their communities. From Manguzi to Durban by road ambulance can take 5 hours, whilst a helicopter transfer would take 1 and half hours.
